Year of the Wood Snake
Celebrating Renewal: Chinese New Year 2025 and the Power of Scent
As January 29, 2025, approaches, the world prepares to welcome the Chinese New Year—a time of renewal, reflection, and fresh beginnings. This year, we step into the Year of the Wood Snake, a symbol of wisdom, adaptability, and the graceful flow of life. It’s a year that invites us to shed old layers, embrace growth, and align ourselves with the rhythms of nature.
My own connection to Chinese culture began many years ago, during a trip to China as a teenager. At a time when foreign visitors were still uncommon, I found myself immersed in a world of contrasts and sensory wonders. Every moment was a revelation from the bustling markets, alive with the aromas of unfamiliar spices and herbs, to the serene and opulent interiors of the Forbidden City—its quiet corners and beautifully adorned walls telling stories of centuries past. That journey left me with a deep curiosity about the ways plants and scents have been woven into Chinese culture for thousands of years. And, as I later discovered, I’m a Fire Dragon in the Chinese zodiac—a fact that only deepened my fascination with this rich and intricate heritage.
The Role of Scent in Renewal
Scent has always held a special place in cultures worldwide, connecting people through a shared appreciation for the beauty and benefits of plants. Three essential oils that resonate deeply with this year's themes are rose geranium, cypress, and clementine, each with unique symbolism and healing properties.
Rose Geranium: In Chinese tradition, red flowers like the rose are cherished as symbols of good luck, prosperity, and joy. Rose geranium, with its delicate floral aroma and subtle citrus undertones, embodies these qualities while also offering emotional balance and uplifting energy. It’s a beautiful oil to use during times of transition, helping to soothe the mind and heart as we navigate change. Interestingly, rose geranium is also beloved in Egypt, where it is one of the most common flowers in gardens. Thousands of kilometres apart, these two cultures have found common ground in their appreciation for this versatile and fragrant plant.
Cypress: Linked to the wood element of the Wood Snake, cypress essential oil carries a grounding, earthy scent that promotes resilience and fluidity. Known for supporting emotional release and encouraging forward movement, cypress is the perfect companion for letting go of the old and embracing the new. Like geranium, cypress also bridges cultures—its majestic trees have been revered in Mediterranean regions, including Egypt, for centuries. Whether in the quiet courtyards of Chinese temples or the sun-drenched landscapes of the Nile, The cypress has been a symbol of strength and renewal across the ages.
Clementine: Citrus scents, particularly those from oranges and tangerines, play a prominent role in Chinese New Year celebrations. These fruits are seen as symbols of prosperity and good fortune due to their auspicious colours and names. The word for "orange" sounds similar to the word for "success", while "tangerine" represents wealth. Therefore, these fruits are often presented as gifts, used to decorate homes, or offered in ceremonial duties to invite fortune. The zesty, refreshing aroma of Clementine essential oil invokes a sense of awakening and renewal, resonating with the spirit of embarking on a new year filled with hope and abundance.
These plants are a testament to how nature can unite us, transcending borders and cultures through their beauty, symbolism, and healing properties.
